Week 6: Challenges to Sustainable Development

Assalamualaikum and hey!! Welcome back to my blog. So, today I have learnt on a new topic which is the Challenges to Sustainable Development.

Based on what I have learned in the class, there are 4 general challenges in applying SDGs. The challenges are inequalities of access to educational resources, inequalities of access to health facilities, inequality of access to food and inequalities of access to clean water.

There are so many unsustainability and inequity that exists in this world. The unsustainability is including socio-economic inequity, cultural inequity, societal inequity, familial inequity, programmatic inequity, instructional inequity, linguistic inequality, assessment inequality and etc.

Meanwhile, the other specific challenges are climate change and clean energy, sustainable transport system, sustainable consumption and production patterns, global poverty, social inclusion, demography and migration issues, public health system, and conservation and management of natural resources.

As we already know, in order to achieve any goals, there will be challenges that are needed to be faced. So, in applying SDGs in Malaysia, there are many challenges which are mainly from social, economic and environmental aspects.

Social Challenges
Firstly, we will talk about social challenges for sustainable development. Why is it exists? This is because as we can see in Malaysia, there are so many people who are very poor and in need of help from other people. In addition, because of this pandemic, the number of unemployment is increasing rapidly due to job loss. This is because the company could not even support to give them wages. Alhamdulillah, in Malaysia there are people who always helping other people especially Ustaz Ebit Lew. With the presence of people like him somehow can help Malaysia in facing this challenge easier. You can see how kind-hearted and generous is Ustaz Ebit Lew with other people by watching the video below.

Economic Challenges
Meanwhile, the main economic challenge for sustainable development is on Goal 12 which is responsible for consumption and production. As we can see in Malaysia, we have a problem with waste management. In Malaysia, up to 1.17 kg of waste has been produced by a person in a day. Malaysian people need to learn how to handle waste properly by having a circular economy. By having the circular economy, the number of waste produced in a day can be reduced efficiently.

Environmental Challenges
Last but not least, sustainable development also has challenges in the environmental aspect. As we already know, there are very many unsustainable exploitations of resources in this world. These exploitations have given so many bad effects on the world. Around 70 to 100 species of animals and plants disappear every year. The tropical forest destroyed also around 17 million hectares per year. The deforestation also makes a huge loss of biological diversity.

I think that is all for the reflective journal for this week. See you in the next post!!
